How's the economy treating you? Still keeping your head above water?
Still have a job to go to each day? According to the US government, we currently have 14.6 million people out of work who would like to be IN work, creating an unemployment rate here of 9.5%. Depending on whom you believe, however, some people insist the US unemployment rate is well above 10% when ALL the people who want jobs are factored in. In parts of Europe the jobless rate is at 20% or better.
The problem, on a personal level, is that it takes losing only ONE job to make the jobless rate for YOU a very difficult 100%. There's no fudging in those figures, is there?
This is why we continually advise folks to have something to fall back on. There is nothing in this current economy that could even remotely be called "job security." That concept has gone the way of the dinosaur. Your employer, in other words, can ALWAYS be counted upon to do what is best for him, for her, or for the corporation. Hoping your company will somehow see the light and do what is best for you in any given situation is like living in a cave and hoping someone will come along who has a match to light your one remaining candle.
In our current economic situation, we have a government which many are now saying is on a fast ride down the hill toward default (otherwise called bankruptcy). If default is somehow prevented, we still have the very strong possibility of rampant inflation caused by the massive influx of cash into the economy over the past couple of years. ("Influx" is the polite term for "bailout.") No matter which way you slice it, the future looks pretty dicey. Sorry for the confusion in metaphors there.
Our advice is always to have something "going for you" besides the job you go to each day. Thankfully, with the Internet today, there are some very good things to get going for you beyond the usual savings account that is nearly impossible to maintain, the 401K that is being hammered relentlessly by the stock market, or the part-time job you probably don't have any more.
